History Buffs

Thursday, December 11 at 10:00 - 11:00 am.

Attention all history buffs! Pearl Harbor is our subject matter this month with Gary Kuhn. Gary, a retired local history teacher, will present an informative talk using the benefits of power-point technology to enhance our learning awareness about this pivotal point in our US history. Some of the questions to be discussed will include:

  • What brought the Japanese attack?
  • What were the midget submarines ?
  • Who were some of the famous spies by the Axis Powers?

 Enjoy this fascinating time of discussion as we take time to learn from the past.

Arm chair travel at its best! This month our featured speaker will be Jerrold ( Jed ) Boscoe. Mr. Boscoe, a devoted travel-explorer, will share his wanderings over this beautiful globe of ours. From his journeys on the African continent to his enchantment with charming Southern Italy, you will be captivated by his appreciation of the beauty, culture and fun that each destination displays.

Also, never one to stop learning or exploring, Jed is in the midst of working on a non-fiction book that is entitled, Mankind’s Destiny. Come, listen and be inspired by a true adventurer on the 2nd Friday of December!

Pumping IronDocumentary centering on the world of men's bodybuilding. "Pumping Iron" captures the punishing training and self-discipline it takes to transform an average body into a prize-winning specimen.

The film focuses on Arnold Schwarzenegger (in his pre-movie star days) as he prepares to compete in the Mr. Olympia and Mr. Universe pageants. His main competitor is TV's "Incredible Hulk", Lou Ferrigno. Surprisingly, when the film was first released, it became a huge box office success, and helped to spawn the career of the future Hollywood action superstar and six-time Mr. Olympia, Arnold Schwarzenegger.

"Lemon Drop Kid"

Friday, December 19
1:00 - 3:30 pm.

Lemon Drop KidBob Hope plays a small-time con artist with a fondness for lemon candy in this film based on a Damon Runyon story.

When the Lemon Drop Kid accidentally cheats gangster Moose Moran (Fred Clark) out of his track winnings, the Kid promises to repay Moose the money by Christmas. Creating a fake charity for "Apple Annie" Nellie Thursday, the Kid tricks his gang into donning Santa suits and "collecting dough for old dolls" like Nellie who have nowhere to live.

 Radio personality Marilyn Maxwell assists as the Kid's girlfriend, while William Frawley and Jay C. Flippen play the lovable, gruff crooks that fall for the Kid's Santa scam.

Bingo Mania
Wednesdays, 1:30 p.m.
Who can resist an afternoon of fun playing BINGO? Join us as we play 9 games. Bingo cards are $1.25 each or 5 cards for $5.  Refreshments served.  No reservations necessary.

Bunco Group
4th Thursday of the month, 12:30 – 2:30 p.m.
If you can roll dice, you can play this fun, social game. Come and be a part of the game that is growing in popularity across the United States. $2.00 per play date. Call Bonnie, 226-0323, to join this group or add your name to the substitute list.

Chess Club
Wednesdays, 6:30 - 9:00 p.m.
Chess, a game of skill, is also a miniature history of medieval times. Each chess piece represents a cross section of the medieval life with its many ceremonies, grandeur, and wars. This club meets every week, all ages are welcome. Already a chess player or want to be, call Irwin, 238-3668.

Duplicate Bridge
Thursdays, 12:30 - 4:30 p.m.
Mondays, 6:00 – 9:00 p.m.
Called "duplicate" because the same bridge hand is played multiple times, winners are determined by comparing your results with others who played the same hand. All are welcome to join us! Questions? Call Fred, 238-5062.

Mah Jongg
Tuesday’s, 1:30 – 3:30 p.m.
Mah Jongg Pieces
Rediscover what women of the 1950's recognized as a comfortable diversion and respite from life's everyday complexities. Mah Jongg, the cordial game whose clacking tiles brought countless people together around folding tables on porches and formica tables in kitchens, resoundingly clacks once again! It is fun, sociable, and relaxing. With patience and a few lessons, you can master the intricacies of Mah Jongg. Call Neeltje at 467-2536 for more information.

Pedro
1st and 3rd Tuesday, 1:00 - 4:00 p.m.
Pedro is a trick-taking card game played with four players, who are divided into two partnerships. You are invited to join the fun. Refreshments will be served. For information, call Mary, 237-1722.

Pinochle
Mondays and Thursdays, 12:30 – 5:00 p.m.
Another “trick-taking” game, Pinochle is for two or four players and played with a 48-card deck. Each hand is played in three phases consisting of: bidding, melds, and tricks. Join us after lunch and play “Paso Robles Pinochle.”

Scrabble
Tuesdays, 12:00 – 5:00 p.m.
Come join a world-wide community by playing Scrabble, an intriguing and mind-tickling game played across the world. For more information call Estella, 238-0213.

Fishing-
The Central Coast Casters
3rd Tuesday of the month, 6:30 p.m.

Java With The Guys
